“It amazes me how they can be extra goofy for their human, their family, but can flip into watchdog mode in a second. How much they love contact with those that they love, and would  be the happiest if they could go under their skin,  but at the  same time be totally indifferent and sometimes aloof towards strangers.

How smart they are but at the same time how much they use their own brain and won’t tolerate violence. Combined with their, for me,  perfect size, and the most amazing exterior that  combines strength and elegance, Xolos are definitely my soul breed.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do xolos get sunburns?

Although xolos are at risk of skin damage if they spend too much time in direct sunlight, they typicaly don’t burn on sun IF they have developed pigment all over their body.

They can be born with nonpigmented areas, mostly on their feet and chest, which can develop pigment as the puppies grow, but nonpigmented areas do burn on sun really easily.

That’s why per FCI standard, dogs that are darker and unicolor are prefered for breeding.

If you use sunscreen for your  dog, please have in mind that human sunscreens often have zinc oxide and aminobenzoic acid which are extremely toxic if your dog ingests it, so be sure that sunscreen that  you use for your dog doesn’t have those ingredients.

Do xolos need to wear clothes in the winter?

Each xolo has diffferent cold resistance, but they generaly don’t do well when it is really cold, and they need to wear sweaters or overalls/pj’s when outside.

When inside of the house and during warmer times, they should have their clothes taken off.

Are xolos easy to train?

Xolos are highly inteligent but also independent and like to think with their own brain.

They need a firm but gentle and consistent hand with clearly defined boundaries.

They do best with a positive reinforcement. They need lots of socialisation and habituation, especially throughtout 1st year of life.

Although they can be a little bit stubborn at times, with correct training they can learn a lot and can be a lot of fun to work with.

Are xolos good with other animals?

Xolos have very high pray instinct, but with sufficient exercise and if they are raised around other animals from a young age, they should learn proper manners around them.

On the other hand, they thrive as pack animals and like to have their doggy company.

Are xolos good with kids/good family dogs?

Xolos develop strong attachment with it’s owner especialy but with it’s family also.

They are very affectionate with the ones they love and trust and ask for a lot of contact, even only a light touch or sleeping next to it’s owners legs.

However, it is important to have in mind that xolos are watchdogs and can be aloof to strangers.

They need lots of socialisation and habituation from very early age in order to do well accepting new people/strangers.

We in Ramberra  Reina start with early neurological stimulation already at 3 days old, and continue working with the pups as long as they are with us to allow best possible temperaments later on.

How much exercise do xolos need?

This is a smart high energy breed, but exact level of energy differs from dog to dog, depending also of it’s size and age.

All of them do require al least one hour of exercise on daily basis.

Adding some enrichment activities can help keep a xolo entertained and mentaly active.

What kind of grooming do xolos need?

Xolos come in two varieties – hairless and coated.

The hairless obviously don’t shed as they can typicaly have just a little bit hair on their head, tip of tail and fingers, not longer than 2.5cm per standard.

However, they do get scratched if they run and play with other dogs, but their skin is thicker and more resistant than the one from coateds plus we have a feeling it heals faster, so with a little help of the sun everything is back to „normal“ very fast.

Durring summer their skin tans like human skin, and they looove to sunbathe, but in periods when they have restricted acces to sun, like in winter, they get a bit paler – just like we humans do.

If  they have normaly developed pigment all over their body, they don’t get sunburnt.

We bath our dogs as needed by their individual needs, in average every 2-3 weeks.

We use gentle soap and always moisturize after bath. Once per month they get a spa treatment with skin pilling. It is also important to wash also in between the dogs fingers when you wash them.

The coateds typicaly do shed a little bit, but regular brushing and seasonal desheding, with baths now and then, should help keep shedding under control.

The nails of a xolo should be trimmed a little bit weekly as they do have sturdy nails which can get really long really fast if not taken care of properly and if the dog doesn’t get much exercise in which they can be naturaly shortened.

Are xolos generally a healthy breed / what is their lifespan?

Xolos are generaly very healthy breed. I’m not aware of any particular genetic health problems that are specific to the breed, but responsible reputable breeders who care for welfare of this ancient breed health test their dogs.

We take our dogs for a certified cardiological and ophtamological examination and do xrays of hips, elbows and check for OCD.

Also, they come from lines where their ancestors were checked and free from 206 genetic diseases.

They can easily get to their teens, especialy if treated right, with quality nutrition and adequate exercise.

For example, grandmother of our base female lived to be 15 years.

Do xolos like to swim?

Even though some xolos prefer sunbathing on the coast, many of them do love water and swimming.

Especialy if it is something they enjoy with their owner.

As swimming is a great excercise for dogs of all ages, as it takes weight off their joints while giving them a nice whole body workout, it is highly adviced to take your dog for a swim.

Do xolos smell?

Xolos typicaly don’t have a classical dog smell, but despite they lack of doggy odor, it is still important to bath them regularly (but not too often) and moistuize their skin after each soapy bath.

Do xolos lack teeth?

While coated xolos need to have all teeth, hairless ones always lack  them, mostly premolars.

The same genetic mutation, FOXI3 gene, is responsible for both hairlessnes and lack of some teeth.

Can xolos have hair?

Yes, xolos can have hair. They come in 2 varieties –  coated and hairless.

Hairless ones can be born totaly without hair on the body, but they can also have short, coarse thick hairs of any colour  on the forehead, back of the neck, the feet and on the end of the tail, that should never be longer than 2.5cm.

Coated variety has hair all over it’s body. It can be expected to have very little hair on it’s belly and inside the rear legs.

The hair should be short, flat and preferably smooth with no undercoat.

Can xolos live as outside dogs?

No, although xolos love outside activities and spending lots of time outside when the weather is nice, they should always have access to the house, especialy in the colder areas and times of the year as they don’t have cold protective layer.

Not even the coated ones.

Can I be allergic to hairless xolos?

Even though many people who suffer from dog alergies find they don’t have a problem with xolos, it is not definitive that you won’t have a reaction, as eventhough they lack coat, they still have some common irritants like saliva and dander.

What should I feed my xolo?

As with any breed, some breeders swear by a raw diet, and some preffer dehydrated food.

We think raw is best if you can be sure to give them a complete meal that doesn’t lack anything. It is also  neecesary to have in mind that raw can be dificult  to bring with you for a trip.

Quality ultrapremium dog kibble is a great substitute that covers both quality diet and practicatlity for travels.

Our dogs are fed with 2/3 of raw meat, 1/3 of cold pressed kibble with addition of high quality fruits, vegetables and oils and occasional raw beef bone
