Xolos come in two varieties – hairless and coated.
The hairless obviously don’t shed as they can typicaly have just a little bit hair on their head, tip of tail and fingers, not longer than 2.5cm per standard.
However, they do get scratched if they run and play with other dogs, but their skin is thicker and more resistant than the one from coateds plus we have a feeling it heals faster, so with a little help of the sun everything is back to „normal“ very fast.
Durring summer their skin tans like human skin, and they looove to sunbathe, but in periods when they have restricted acces to sun, like in winter, they get a bit paler – just like we humans do.
If they have normaly developed pigment all over their body, they don’t get sunburnt.
We bath our dogs as needed by their individual needs, in average every 2-3 weeks.
We use gentle soap and always moisturize after bath. Once per month they get a spa treatment with skin pilling. It is also important to wash also in between the dogs fingers when you wash them.
The coateds typicaly do shed a little bit, but regular brushing and seasonal desheding, with baths now and then, should help keep shedding under control.
The nails of a xolo should be trimmed a little bit weekly as they do have sturdy nails which can get really long really fast if not taken care of properly and if the dog doesn’t get much exercise in which they can be naturaly shortened.
